Macro-to-Micro Fluidic Cartridge
The Challenge
The challenge was to take relatively large raw samples—often measured in milliliters—and funnel them down into microscopic analysis channels where the actual cellular-level sensing happens. Doing this in a lab is one thing, but making it work in a consumer-ready format meant we had to solve the massive disparity in scales without losing the sample in “dead volume” or creating pressure spikes that would destroy the delicate micro-scale architecture.
Our Solution
A high-performance fluidic cartridge specifically optimized for large-scale injection molding was engineered, moving the design from a prototype toward a mass-producible product. The heart of the solution was a series of specialized manifold transitions that gradually step down the fluid volume from the macro-input to the micro-channels. By refining the internal geometry, we were able to maintain a continuous, laminar flow that minimizes the amount of sample trapped in the system. This ensures that even small concentrations of biomarkers reach the sensors efficiently. The final design doesn’t just work on a functional level; it also respects the strict draft angles and wall-thickness requirements necessary for high-throughput manufacturing, ensuring a low cost-per-unit without sacrificing the precision required for high-accuracy analysis.
